thanks for reporting this.

I'm the current maintainer of mail applet and I really don't have time to fix this right now (or the next month for that matter). So if nobody else fixes it, I'll do it when I have time, which as I sad will be in about a month. Or sooner if I find a spare hour or two, but I can't promise anything.

The thing about mail applet is, that it really needs to be rewritten, since it's code is well ... crap (Note that I'm only the maintainer and not the original author of the applet).

I made a mental and literal :) note of this and I'll solve it as soon as I have some time.

It's not a major issue, so there's no problem if it's a while before it's addressed. I'll try a few other fixes and post back on the results - might be of some use.

One thing that I didn't post is that I use Thunderbird rather than Evolution, and the applet preference to set T/bird as the mail application survives a reboot, where the other elements of the preference panel don't - might be a clue there.

Good luck with your other commitments - hope they go your way.
