I've taken Emmanuele Bassi's very shiny Tweet (which is a Clutter-based Twitter application), and ported it into an Awn applet. I'd take a screenshot, but it seems that Clutter and my version of gnome-screenshot do not play well together. Just imagine the main Tweet UI inside of an applet dialog :)

Currently, it is only available in a git repository. (If I could use bzr, I would...) When I find some time, I will try to create some Ubuntu packages and put them in my PPA (~malept, not ~awn-testing). This is probably not going to go into Awn Extras, because it's too tied to the Tweet UI (static) library. Again, if I have some time, I might change that.

I should note that while several people are using it to some degree of success, this is an experimental applet (mostly due to the Clutter part). If you experience problems, first make sure that it also doesn't occur with the standalone app. If it's an applet-only bug, please report it here. Be sure to include the revision hash (`git show | head -n 1`) when reporting.
